Ace tanker Rex Soriano of Grade 10 halted colleague Jhay-Rich Gerez’s endgame poise in the last 15 seconds stretch to cop a gold in the 200m Breaststroke event during the 2019 Intramurals held at the Quezon National High School, June 27.

Six-foot Soriano clocked a 3:15.68s run propelling an eight-second advantage against Gerez who chipped a 3:23.46s record while Sophomore rookie Raymond Abril fell short with a 4:27.56 wide margin.

Soriano quickly took advantage of the initial dive with a fleet-fitted reaction time and quickly gained the spearhead in the early 15 seconds of the race.

Trimming down the deficit, Gerez buffered his strokes to keep up with Soriano’s pace, but Gerez still couldn’t see opportunities to inch the behemoth until the 1:15th mark where he was able to upend Soriano.

Meanwhile, Abril had a sluggish start as he was troubled finding his momentum while chasing his Senior contenders in the midst of a nerve-racking race.

Two minutes in the stopwatch, Soriano outswam Gerez and headed the pack through the rest of the minute, while Abril, who is lethargically seeking good composure, remained stuck in the latter of the trio.

Gerez struggled to grope his way out of the second placing while Soriano kept his forefront stable in the final 15 ticks, while Abril was too laggard to wound an advantage against his opponents.

Overpowering his tormentors, Soriano then sank their hopes as he established a 3:15.68s clock time to snag gold in the competition, while Gerez registered 3:23.46s and Abril posted a 4:27.56s score.

“That’s not my best performance though kasi hindi ako nakapag-practice three days before Intrams pero despite all that I still did my best and ganito na talaga laro ko simula Grade 7”, stressed Soriano in a post-game interview.

Soriano was crowned as the overall champion since his freshman years, and now he clawed his 4th winning spectacle after dominating in the 200m backstroke and breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m Individual medley and a silver for the 100m backstroke.

The Seniors hauled a total of 8 golds and 7 silvers in the swim tilt, including the ones from Soriano and Gerez, making the Grade 10 the overall Champion in the Boy’s Swimming category.
