Sophomore John Michael Alvia showcased a hard-fought duel against Ivan Cedrick Quinto as he edged a two-deuce match with 12-11, 8-11, 13-11 in the lose-to-lose match of Table Tennis in the QNHS Intramurals 2019 at the Gymnasium, June 28.

Alvia turned his fortune around in the deciding set after working on his chops with Quinto groping for form giving advantage to him to catapult in the semis of the said event.
“Inayos ko na yung mga atake ko sa last set, lalo na yung chop para sa pagatake nya naman hanggang table nya nalang dahil magne-net yun”, Alvia said.
Alvia and Quinto both started out flat in the first set as they were just returning points with their errors and outs swamping the game already, 4-4.
The sophomore seemed to found his range after tying up the game as he fired two consecutive forehand smashes nailing Quinto at 7-4.
Quinto then came back to life as he initiated the first deuce of the game after a smash proving steadier down the stretch with Alvia losing his stance, 10-11.
However, Alvia registered a chop and Quinto having an error ending him up in the first set, 12-11.
“Yung mga palo ko, nilagyan ko ng spin para kapag malakas lang yung palo nya, tsaka lang papasok sa table ko,” Alvia expressed.
Alvia maintained his lead in the game as he already bagged five points in the first minutes of the second set with Quinto fumbling, 5-2.
Quinto, on the other hand, stepped up his attack after three consecutive forehand smash and two blocks taking the second set, 8-11.
“Puro chop na sya nung second set kaya cinounter ko sya ng forehand smash kaya nakabawi ako,” Quinto explained.
Alvia roared back to life with his spins and forehand attack with Quinto lapsing into a series of net errors, 4-2.
Quinto then didn’t just let Alvia win in that kind of way as he asserted dominance in the attacks with his forehand smash for another standoff of deuce match, 11-11.
Alvia lived up to his top billing as he worked on his chop with Quinto groping for form with the change of Alvia’s attack ending him up to advance in semis, 13-11.
